Nu Chapter Raises Over $1800 for St. Jude’s through Letter Writing Event

Berkeley, CA – September 8, 2010 – On March 14^th, 2010, Nu Chapter held a letter writing event for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, sending out a total of 424 letters to friends and family members, asking them to donate some amount to the Hospital.

Recently, the Philanthropy Chairman at Nu Chapter, Alex Hebels, received an email from St. Jude’s with the total amount raised as a direct result of those letters: 1878 dollars total. This money will be used to fund the non-profit children’s hospital which accepts and treats children for free.

“It’s great to know that so many family members and other people we have contacted were so eager to send money to our main philanthropy organization,” said Alex Hebels.

St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital has been Nu Chapter’s designated philanthropy organization for the past year and a half. The chapter has also raised money through its Battle of the Bands event last year.

TKE Nu Chapter Receives Top TKE Award for 2009-10 Academic Year

Berkeley, CA – September 7, 2010 – On August 27, 2010, the Nu Chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon received the Top TKE Award for the 2009-2010 academic year.

The Top TKE Award was only given to nine chapters across the United States and Canada this year that exemplified what it means to be an ideal and successful part of the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity.

“Per National’s standards, we have excelled in the areas of Recruitment, Chapter Size, Chapter Philanthropy, Academics, Alumni Involvement, and Extracurriculars,” wrote Dustin McKenzie, President of Nu Chapter, in an email to the fraters of Nu Chapter. “This is our second straight Top TKE Award and our third in five years.”

Nu Chapter, along with the other eight chapters will be featured in the Summer 2010 edition of The TEKE Magazine, as well as on the National Fraternity website of Tau Kappa Epsilon, http://tke.org.

Nu Chapter Participates in Emergency Preparedness Drill

Berkeley, CA – June 17, 2010 – UC Berkeley’s annual emergency preparedness drill took place on the morning of Thursday, June 17th, with more than 700 people participating in activities both indoors and outdoors across the campus and in nearby areas.

Tau Kappa Epsilon was one of the campus affiliates that participated in the “Vigilance 2010″ drill, organized by the campus’s Office of Emergency Preparedness. The exercise was designed to ensure that the campus is ready to respond to a major emergency. This year’s scenario involves a magnitude 5.5 earthquake on the Hayward fault that leads to a hazardous material spill on campus.

This drill provided Tau Kappa Epsilon the perfect opportunity to test the new CalGreeks Emergency Plan, part of a wider CalGreeks preparedness imitative, pioneered and written by recently graduated Frater Anthony James Wright. The new plan goes into effect in August with the 2010-2011 school year.

Tau Kappa Epsilon would like to encourage all members of the UC Berkeley campus community to sign up for WarnMe and to view emergency preparedness tips.

Calling All Alumni! Nu Chapter to Host UC Santa Cruz Initiation

Berkeley, CA – May 27, 2010 – TKE is starting a new colony at the UC Santa Cruz Campus, and Nu Chapter will be hosting their first initiation this Saturday, May 29th at 2:30 PM. The initiation will be administered by a Nu Chapter Ritual Team and will be the first initiation for the colony.

We would like to invite any Alumnus in the area to be part of this occasion and to show the Santa Cruz Colony that TKE truly is a Fraternity for Life. Since, as a new colony, they have no active members, and most of Nu Chapter is away on summer break, it would be great if they could have a large number of Fraters to witness their first initiation and to set their colony in the right direction.

TKENu.com Undergoes Major Redesign

Berkeley, CA – May 24, 2010 – This past weekend the Tau Kappa Epsilon Nu Chapter website went through a complete overhaul, resulting in a strikingly new homepage.

The newest changes to TKEnu.com, spearheaded by Christian Handley, the Public Relations chair at Nu Chapter, take full advantage of open web standards, removing the old Flash header from the previous version of the site.

“The website is now far friendlier to mobile devices which may not have Flash installed,” said Christian. “Also, the site looks much better in general, having installed Wordpress as the main backbone of the site.”

With the latest design, news updates from Nu Chapter will be much more visible to the public. Also, the site will serve as an invaluable tool in recruitment, serving as a one stop destination for anyone interested in Nu Chapter or Tau Kappa Epsilon in general.

TKE Nu Hosts Parent’s Dinner for Families of Brothers

Berkeley, CA – April 17, 2010 – On Cal Day 2010, the brothers at Nu Chapter planned and arranged a dinner for any and all families related to the house.

Over forty people attended, comprising of 19 brothers and their families. Dinner was prepared by the current cook for the house, Ray Johnson, and consisted of three courses.

At the dinner, each officer of the chapter introduced themselves, and the Chapter President, Dustin McKenzie, gave a brief status update about the house and what the brothers had accomplished in the past school year.

The dinner was planned and executed by the current Public Relations Chair, Christian Handley, and he plans on ensuring that a Parent’s Dinner continues to happen every semester.

Nu Chapter Holds Letter Writing Event for St. Jude Children’s Hospital

Berkeley, CA – March 14, 2010 – On March 14^th, 2010, members from Berkeley’s Greek community gathered at TKE Nu Chapter to write to friends and family to encourage them to donate to St. Jude’s Children hospital.

Overall, 13 brothers and 10 membership candidates attended from Nu Chapter, as well as a handful of women from Tri-Delta, attended the event. Each person was encouraged to send at least 10 letters, with some brothers sending almost 40, if not more.

“We ended up sending off 424 combined letters,” says Ted Rothenberg, the Philanthropy Chairman for Nu Chapter. “We hope that this will result in many donations to St. Jude’s.”

A raffle was also held at the event, where an entry was earned for each letter sent off. The winner was given an iPod Touch.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is TKE’s national philanthropic partner organization, and is unlike any other pediatric treatment and research facility. It houses some of the most knowledgeable researchers in the world, and uses the most cutting edge technology. It is well known that the hospital will accept any and all patients without regard to ability or inability to pay. Nu Chapter Announces Summer Housing Opportunities

Berkeley, CA – April 5, 2010 – The Nu Chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon is proud to announce that there will be rooms available for rent over the summer in the Chapter House. All those looking for rooms in the house should have a reference with a current and active member of the chapter; those without references will not be considered.

Rooms are rented as a whole, and singles, doubles, and triples are available on a first come first serve basis. Some rooms are equipped with a private bathroom. Rooms must be rented for the entire summer (From May 21^st – April 18^th). For room rates please click here, there is a $500 refundable security deposit for each resident. A plan of the house is available here.

The Nu Chapter house is equipped with high speed internet and Wi-Fi access through-out the house, all rooms are equipped with basic cable, and premium cable is available for a nominal cost. Common areas of the house are cleaned twice a week by a professional cleaning service. Access to the kitchen is provided, however residents are responsible for cleaning all cookware and dishes. Nu Chapter Hosts Dinners for UC Berkeley Faculty

Berkeley, CA – March 15, 2010 – On March 8th and 15th Nu Chapter was privileged to have had a number of faculty guests join the brothers for dinner. Among them were members from the Local Government and Community Relations Office, the Center for Student Conduct and Community Standards, as well as from the Offices of Fraternity & Sorority Life.

The dinners, organized in part by Kyle Meshna, current Nu Chapter Chaplain, and Anthony Wright, helped foster a closer relation between the brothers and these members of the UC Berkeley Faculty.

“It was really great to meet and talk to these esteemed faculty members and to see the faces behind these organizations that make UC Berkeley what it is,” said Dustin McKenzie, Chapter President.

TKE Sustainability Chair Sets Up Solid Waste Recycling Program for Nu Chapter

Berkeley, CA – March 24, 2010 – Nu Chapter’s Sustainability Chairman, Jordon Hemingway, of Mu Class, has started a solid waste recycling program for Nu Chapter, with the goal to reduce the solid waste produced by at least 50%.

The first phase of this program has recently been implemented, which includes in room recycling bins for every brother, hallways bins for aluminum, plastic, and glass, as well as hallway bins for paper and cardboard.

“By incorporating brother involvement and participation with these new recycling bins, we have already dramatically reduced our waste,” says Hemingway. “The next steps in accomplishing our goal are to obtain a compost bin for food scraps in the kitchen and to ensure complete brother involvement in the program.”

Every week the bins are emptied, and any money made from recycling goes right back into the sustainability program.
